This past week, members of the Darien Police Marine Division conducted a familiarization training on Long Island Sound.  The Marine Division is a fully staffed unit of the Darien Police Department. The Division operates seven days a week from May to October and during the winter months is maintained and available for emergencies twenty-four hours a day.

     The drills they conducted included:

  •  Vessel Pursuit, engagement & boarding techniques (Use of Darien Boat Club Vessel)
    • Following Suspect Vessel
    • Approaching a Stopped Vessel
    • Best Practices- Tying to Suspect Vessel / Boarding procedure
    • Routine Vessel Safety Inspection- Required Equipment
  • Rescue Operations
    • Use of in-water backboard for suspected injury
    • Rescue of unconscious person in the water
    • Rescue of conscious person in the water
    • Rescue of panicked person in the water
    • Approach, officer safety, self defense
  • Fire Suppression
    • Use of water pump/fire hose as a fire suppression tool
    • Safe preparation of “charged” hose on board
  • Partially Submerged Vessels
  • Assembly/Operation of Water Pump
    • Best Practices in Vessel Pumping
  • Mustang Suit Familiarity
    • Donning/Doffing Suit
    • Uses/Best Practices
