MINUTES
DARIEN POLICE COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
OCTOBER 21, 2009
1. CALL TO ORDER
The 2,195th meeting of the Darien Police Commission was held on the above mentioned date at Police Headquarters. Commissioner Johnson, Commissioner Truebner, Commissioner Harrel, Chief Lovello, Lt. Anderson, Sgt. Marron and Jan Lesko (Commission Secretary) were present. The meeting was called to order at 5:30 PM.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Harrel made a motion to approve the minutes of the meeting held on October 7, 2009, seconded by Commissioner Truebner. All were in favor. The time was 5:32 PM.
3. DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY
a. The arrest warrant came back from court today for 21 motor vehicle burglaries.
b. A pedestrian was struck yesterday at the intersection of Post Road and Center Street and received non-life threatening injuries.
c. Earlier this week a pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle and claimed he/she was fine with no injuries. The driver of the motor vehicle is now being sought as the pedestrian is now claiming injuries.
d. Active shooter tactical training is taking place this week at Middlesex Middle School.
e. A suspect has been identified in connection with the recent funeral home thefts.
f. Blasting is taking place this week at the Whole Foods site on Ledge Road.
4. CORRESPONDENCE
a. Thank you letter to Lt. Anderson for his assistance at Feed the Children.
b. Thank you letter to K9 Zulu for his participation at the Senior Men’s Club luncheon.
c. Letters to Officers Cummings, Ehret and Mastroianni advising them of their selection as field training officers.
5. OLD BUSINESS
Supervisor Training at Roger Williams University
Sgt. Marron reported on the mid-level supervisor training seminar he recently attended at Roger Williams University. It was very beneficial and he recommends sending other supervisors from the Department to future seminars.
Chief Lovello advised that Lt. Osborne is now attending a two-week training session for mid-level managers at Roger Williams and that four officers will be enrolled in a three-day Field Training Officer Coordinator program to take place at Roger Williams in mid-November.
6. NEW BUSINESS
Proposed Plans for 1077 Boston Post Road
Lt. Anderson advised Planning & Zoning that there is concern regarding the outside seating and pedestrian passage. There has been a dispute as to ownership of the sidewalk and that needs to be resolved. The Police Commission expressed concern regarding the outside seating as well and its possible encroachment on the Post Road sidewalk.
False Alarm Fund
Chief Lovello requested approval to use funds from the False Alarm fund to purchase Department challenge coins. These coins are used as incentive awards and trading with other departments. The cost would be $1865 which includes the setup fee. Commissioner Truebner motioned to approve the purchase of Department challenge coins at a cost of $1865 to be funded by revenue from the False Alarm fund, seconded by Commissioner Harrel. All were in favor. The time was 5:57 PM.
Recommendation for Commendation
A Recommendation for Commendation was reviewed for Officer Aranzullo and K9 Zulu. This Recommendation for Commendation was issued for their excellent performance in connection with the recovery of one-half pound of marijuana secreted in a motor vehicle. The Police Commission acknowledged and fully endorsed this Recommendation for Commendation.
Entry Level Police Officer Candidates
The Police Commission interviewed fourteen potential candidates and from those, six have been selected to proceed to the next step. These six have been offered a conditional job offer which allows them to go for polygraph and psychological testing.
7. EXECUTIVE SESSION
None.
8. ADJOURNMENT
There being no other business to be considered, Commissioner Truebner motioned to adjourn, seconded by Commissioner Johnson. All were in favor. The time was 6:03PM.
