DARIEN POLICE COMMISSION
MARCH 16, 2011
1. CALL TO ORDER
The 2,224th meeting of the Darien Police Commission was held on the above mentioned date at Police Headquarters. Commissioner Johnson, Commissioner Santarella, Chief Lovello, Lt. Krois and Jan Lesko (Commission Recording Secretary) were present. Commissioner Harrel is undergoing medical treatment in Florida and monitored the meeting via telephone but did not introduce or vote on any motion. The meeting was called to order at 5:00 PM.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Santarella motioned to approve the minutes of the meeting held on March 2, 2011, seconded by Commissioner Johnson. All were in favor. The time was 5:03 PM.
A letter commending the services of Officer Joseph Licari regarding medical assistance was received from Darien resident Veronica Whitehill.
4. DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY
A motor vehicle which was stolen from Hindley School was recovered this week in the Bronx and arrests made by NYPD..
A motor vehicle accident occurred on Brookside Road causing serious injuries to the driver.
5. OLD BUSINESS
Police Department Building Project
A meeting of the Police Department Building Committee was held earlier today. The project is proceeding on schedule. Monthly meetings will be conducted the third Wednesday of every month.
Entry Level Test Update
Five certified police officers took the written examination for entry level police officer on March 8. One officer failed the exam. Four officers are scheduled to take the physical fitness examination on March 18th. Oral interviews with the staff are scheduled for March 24th and oral interviews with the Police Commission are being scheduled for March 30th.
6. NEW BUSINESS
Fireworks 2011/Push Pull Parade – Chief Lovello sent an email and also spoke to First Selectman Campbell and Town Administrator Kilduff regarding the difficulties involved with the Push Pull Parade being held on the same day as the Town fireworks. First Selectman Campbell will contact Nancy Coughlin to discuss.
Leash Ordinance – The Parks and Rec Commission will be meeting tonight to discuss the proposed leash ordinance. The position of the Police Commission is that Woodland Park remains status quo (leash at all times) and supports the recommendation of the Chief of Police that there be no free running dogs at Woodland Park. The Police Commission will defer to the position of the Director of Parks and Rec regarding Cherry Lawn Park. The Commission was also in agreement that dogs should be leashed at Baker Field, McGuane Field, and the Town Hall ball fields. Also, dogs should not be allowed at the town beaches.
There being no other business to be considered, Commissioner Johnson motioned to adjourn, seconded by Commissioner Santarella. All were in favor. The time was 5:35 PM.
