MINUTES

DARIEN POLICE COMMISSION

SPECIAL MEETING

MAY 23, 2012

1.         CALL TO ORDER

The 2,245th meeting of the Darien Police Commission was held on the above mentioned date at Police Headquarters.  Commissioner Johnson, Commissioner Harrel, Commissioner Santarella, Chief Lovello, Lt. Anderson and Jan Lesko (Commission Secretary) were in attendance.  The meeting was called to order at 4:03 PM.

2.         APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Commissioner Santarella motioned to approve the minutes of the regular meeting held on May 2, 2012, seconded by Commissioner Johnson.  All were in favor. The time was 4:05 PM.

3.         CORRESPONDENCE

A letter from Capt. Conklin of the Stamford Police Department commending the services of Officers Michael Cummings and Mauricio Vigil in regard to a narcotic investigation was reviewed.  The Police Commission applauded the outstanding work of these two officers.

A letter from a second resident to Commissioner Santarella regarding parking on Bailey Avenue was reviewed and will be deferred to Lt. Anderson for his input.  Lt. Anderson reiterated that it is a Connecticut state statute which prohibits parking within 25’ of a corner.  He will follow up on this situation.

4.         DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY

Complaints have been received from residents of Rowayton and Sen. Duff regarding violations of the No Thru Trucks prohibition.  It was determined by our Traffic Division that most trucks are in compliance of the prohibition.

The Cops & Kids Adventure grant concluded with a picnic at The Depot.

Officer Benedetto accompanied Detective Murphy to the Fairfield County Burglary Squad meeting on Wednesday.

Officer Edwin Vigil successfully completed Police Motorcycle school.

The Town fireworks will be held on Sunday, July 1st.  A planning meeting is scheduled for next week.

Three of the four new Chevrolet Caprice patrol vehicles have been delivered and are being sent out for outfitting.

The lane closure on West Avenue for the Boy Scout tag sale was successful.

The RTM approved the gift to the Police Department from the Darien Technology Foundation.

5.         OLD BUSINESS

Police Department Building Project

The building project is still proceeding on schedule.  Next week the Communications Center will be outfitted.

6.         NEW BUSINESS

Request for Outside Employment – Sgt. Alison Hudyma

A request from Sgt. Alison Hudyma seeking permission for outside part-time employment selling beauty products was reviewed.  Commissioner Harrel motioned to approve Sgt. Hudyma’s request for part-time employment, seconded by Commissioner Johnson.  All were in favor.  The time was 4:35 PM.

Requests from False Alarm Account

Chief Lovello requested $750 from the False Alarm account funds to purchase crime scene processing materials for the newly trained field investigators.  Commissioner Harrel motioned to approve the use of $7500 from the False Alarm account to purchase crime scene processing materials, seconded by Commissioner Santarella.  All were in favor.  The time was 4:41 PM.

Chief Lovello requested $3,200 from the False Alarm account funds to cover the outfitting expense for the Department’s third motorcycle officer.   Commissioner Harrel motioned to approve the use of $3,200 from the False Alarm account to cover the expense of outfitting the third motorcycle officer, seconded by Commissioner Santarella.  All were in favor.  The time was 4:46 PM.

Chief Lovello requested $1,200 from the False Alarm account funds to cover expenses for two officers attending the NIJ Conference in Arlington, Virginia.  Commissioner Harrel motioned to approve the use of $1,200 from the False Alarm account to cover expenses for two officers to attend the NIJ Conference in Arlington, Virginia, seconded by Commissioner Johnson.  All were in favor.  The time was 4:52 PM.

7.         ADJOURNMENT

There being no other business to be considered, Commissioner Johnson motioned to adjourn, seconded by Commissioner Santarella.   All were in favor.  The time was 4:55 PM.
