DARIEN POLICE COMMISSION
OCTOBER 24, 2012
1. CALL TO ORDER
The 2,251st meeting of the Darien Police Commission was held on the above mentioned date at Police Headquarters. Commissioner Johnson, Commissioner Santarella, Chief Lovello, and Jan Lesko (Commission Secretary) were in attendance. Commissioner Harrel monitored the meeting via telephone but did not introduce or vote on any motion. Channel 79 was also present, filming the meeting. The meeting was called to order at 4:00 PM.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Santarella motioned to approve the minutes of the regular meeting held on September 26, 2012, seconded by Commissioner Johnson. All were in favor. The time was 5:03 PM.
A letter was received from residents of Stratford commending Officers Macniven and Ehret for their service when their boat became disabled and assistance was needed.
4. DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY
The investigation concerning the recent BMW burglaries is proceeding nicely and progress is being made.
Suspects have been identified in a Mystic Lane burglary and an attempted burglary on Scout Trail. Some of the property has been recovered from the Mystic Lane burglary.
Regular activity has included a few domestic incidents, evading motor vehicle accidents, and suspicious persons.
The School Resource Officer program is moving along nicely.
5. OLD BUSINESS
Update on SMIP
The Commission previously approved expenses to send an officer to SMIP (Sr. Management Institute for Policing). Administrative Lt. Ray Osborne has been selected to attend the three-week program which is scheduled for June.
Update on Roger Williams University
This Department has enjoyed a long time partnership with Roger Williams University. Sgt. Isaac and Sgt. Moore will be attending the Supervisor Training Program at RWU in the near future.
6. NEW BUSINESS
Requests from False Alarm Account
Chief Lovello requested $750 from the False Alarm account to be used to reimburse Sgt. Johnson for expenses incurred during his recent attendance at Harvard Candidate School on Policing and Public Safety. Only a select few are invited to attend this seminar and it was a privilege to have Sgt. Johnson representing this Department. Commissioner Johnson motioned to approve $750 from the False Alarm account to reimburse Sgt. Johnson for expenses incurred during his attendance at this seminar, seconded by Commissioner Santarella. All were in favor. The time was 4:20 PM.
Chief Lovello requested the use of $2,000 from the False Alarm account to supplement equipment needed on Marine 1. The marine unit experienced an active season and the rescue which took place in Stamford identified deficiencies in equipment on Marine 1, such as an extra pony bottle. Commissioner Santarella motioned to approve the use of $2,000 from the False Alarm account to purchase supplemental equipment needed on the marine unit, seconded by Commissioner Johnson. All were in favor. The time was 4:24 pm.
Chief Lovello requested the use of $1,900 to purchase sound equipment and a DVD player for the Department’s exercise room. The exercise room is used frequently by officers on their own time and this equipment would enhance the workout times and promote a healthy lifestyle. Commissioner Santarella motioned to approve the use of $1,900 from the False Alarm account to purchase sound equipment and a DVD player for the Department’s exercise room, seconded by Commissioner Johnson. All were in favor. The time was 4:26 PM.
There being no other business to be considered, Commissioner Johnson motioned to adjourn, seconded by Commissioner Santarella. All were in favor. The time was 4:30 PM.
