DARIEN POLICE COMMISSION
APRIL 3, 2013
1. CALL TO ORDER
The 2,258th meeting of the Darien Police Commission was held on the above mentioned date at Police Headquarters. Commissioner Johnson, Commissioner Huffard, Chief Lovello, First Selectwoman Jayme Stevenson, Capt. Pavia, Sgt. Marron and Jan Lesko (Commission Secretary) were in attendance. Commissioner Harrel joined the meeting at 5:00 PM via telephone but did not vote on any motion. The meeting was called to order at 5:00 PM.
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Johnson introduced and welcomed new Police Commissioner Kim Huffard. The minutes of the meeting held on March 13, 2013 were accepted as presented, approved by Commissioner Johnson. All were in favor. The time was 5:03 PM.
There was no correspondence to review.
4. DEPARTMENT ACTIVITY
A fairly significant domestic violence incident occurred this week. A home health care aide was arrested for allegedly swindling funds from an elderly patient in her care. School Liaison Officers, coordinated by Lt. Osborne, have completed their school walk-throughs. The monthly school administrators meeting will take place next Monday at Police Headquarters. The Department is experiencing numerous malfunctions with duty weapons and the issue is being addressed. Installation of in-car cameras is nearing completion and should begin operation next week. The Department’s Open House is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, June 2nd. A grievance hearing pertaining to sergeants being on the road will be held on May 31st at Town Hall with an arbitrator presiding. The Department has received a grant in the amount of $19,259 to upgrade CPU’s in police vehicles, leaving a balance of $2,015.
5. OLD BUSINESS
Update on Proposed 2013/2014 Budget
Jamie McLaughlin and Joe Duan from the Board of Finance met with Capt. Komm last week to review various items in the Department’s proposed 2013/2014 budget.
6. NEW BUSINESS
False Alarm Account
Chief Lovello requested $2,015 from the False Alarm account to fund the balance remaining from the $19,259 grant to upgrade CPU’s in the patrol vehicles. Commissioner Johnson motioned to approve the use of $2,015 to fund the balance of the grant received for upgrading CPU’s in patrol vehicles, seconded by Commissioner Huffard. All were in favor. The time was 5:18 PM.
Discussion was held regarding the funding of approximately $3,000 for an Eagle Scout project wherein bicycle racks at the Town’s train stations would be replaced and upgraded. It was agreed that this should be a partnership consisting of the Town of Darien, Darien Police Department and private funding. Commissioner Johnson motioned to approve the use of $1,000 from the False Alarm account to help fund the Eagle Scout Bicycle Rack project, seconded by Commissioner Huffard. All were in favor. The time was 5:23 PM.
There being no other business to be considered, Commissioner Johnson motioned to adjourn, seconded by Commissioner Huffard. All were in favor. The time was 5:25 PM.
The next meeting of the Darien Police Commission will take place on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at 5:00 PM at Police Headquarters.
