The Darien Police Department is pleased to welcome its newest member, K-9 “Zulu.” Zulu is a 21-month-old German shepherd that was born and raised in the Czech-Republic.  This unit is the first of its kind in the department’s 84-year history.
Until now, if a police K-9 was needed, our agency had to request mutual aid assistance from the Connecticut State Police or surrounding agencies.  This often caused considerable delays and hindered investigations requiring immediate searches.  On some occasions, no K-9 unit was available.  Using funds from the Town of Darien’s alarm ordinance, our agency has been able to fund the initial and ongoing expense of the unit.
Before coming to the United States 3 months ago, Zulu received extensive training in obedience, tracking, and protection.  In anticipation of his police career, he was selected by European police dog trainers and our department for his exceptional courage, physical strength, and agility.
Officer Nicholas Aranzullo, a four-year veteran of the department, has been selected to be the
K-9 handler.  When not on duty, Zulu will reside with Officer Aranzullo and will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Officer Aranzullo and Zulu recently completed an intense eight-week training and certification program with Master K9 Trainer William Scribner of Renbar Kennels.
The Darien Police K-9 Unit will be a full-time addition to the department’s patrol force.
The K-9’s special abilities include:
§                     Locating lost or missing children/persons
§                     Evidence Recovery
§                     Narcotic Detection
§                     Building Searches
§                     Crime Deterrent
§                     Criminal Apprehension
§                        Public Relations
§                        Officer Protection
