Darien Police Officers Given Incentive to Donate to “Toys For Tots”

Darien Police Officers who make a $50.00 donation to the “Toys for Tots” program, are temporarily excused from the Department’s mandatory grooming and appearance policy.   For participating officers, the Darien Police Commission has approved provisional relief from the department’s General Orders pertaining to “facial hair” and the “wearing of earrings.”  Currently the department’s policy mandates that “officers shall be clean shaven on duty, except for mustaches.  Mustaches are not to extend beyond the lip and are to be neatly trimmed.  Beards and goatees are prohibited.  All officers are prohibited from wearing earrings on duty.  ”

Male officers who make the $50.00 donation will be allowed to wear a neatly trimmed “goatee,” with or without a mustache, through the month of December.  Female officers may wear stud type earrings while on duty for the same time period.  A $100.00 donation will allow participation through January 31, 2010.

This incentive-based fundraiser was proposed by the officers themselves and is the first of its kind for the department.  It is also the first time in the department’s 85 year history that this long-standing policy has been relaxed.

The opening day of the Fundraiser welcomed 10 officers who made donations.
