On Saturday, 12/4/2010, at approximately 4:00pm, the Darien Police Department responded to 55 Brookside Drive on the report of a disturbance.  A third party had contacted police and reported that a male resident at that location had assaulted a 91 year old family member.   The victim sustained minor injuries and had fled the scene at that point.
Officers found the house secured however it was determined that the suspect was in an upstairs bedroom.  The suspect engaged officers by yelling suicidal statements and threats through a second story window. Armed with two hatchets, he became more agitated and climbed out of the window onto the roof.  He continued to threaten to kill himself, and told officers that he was not coming down. On several occasions he acted in a threatening manner towards the officers by raising the hatchets above his head.
Officers trained in crisis negotiation began to talk with the suspect.  After approximately ninety minutes he climbed back into the house but barricaded himself into his bedroom.  Officers continued to negotiate with the individual for approximately thirty more minutes and he eventually came out of his bedroom and surrendered to police.
The male resident, who is not being identified at this point, was taken into custody and charged with Assault 3rd of a victim over age 60, Threatening 2nd , Disorderly Conduct, and Criminal Mischief 3rd.  After processing the subject was transported to Stamford Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
