Program Title:
Specialized Training and Equipment Acquisition
The Darien Police Department is in the process of requesting funding from the Recovery Act: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) in order to conduct training exercises and to procure a digital camcorder. The United States Department of Justice has allocated $17,798 in Justice Assistance Grant funds to the Town of Darien to be used for law enforcement purposes.
Specifically, the department intends to conduct an eight hour practical training exercise involving three program areas of particular importance to law enforcement.
A total of forty officers will participate in the training exercises. Expert law enforcement instructors from outside the department will be brought in to conduct the training.
The first program area consists of officer response to a school active shooter scenario. The training will be conducted at the town’s middle school over a period of several Saturdays when school is not in session.
To enhance the realism of the training, simunitions will be utilized during roll play exercises.
The second program area consists of a practical training exercise involving officer response to high risk motor vehicle stops and motor vehicle stops that transition from routine to high risk. This training is particularly important as officer initiated motor vehicle stops for such things as traffic violations result in attacks on officers and account for a substantial percentage of those officers killed or seriously injured annually.
The third program area consists of officers being trained on proper procedures when conducting building searches. Building searches present both known and unknown hazards depending on the situation, and it is extremely important that officers conduct these searches safely and expeditiously.
In addition to the training exercises, the department intends to purchase a Canon digital camcorder to be used by the Detective Division when conducting criminal investigations.
