On Thursday, 1/29/09, at approximately 10:59 AM, a bank robbery occurred at Peoples Bank located at the Goodwives Shopping Center, 25 Old Kings Highway North, Darien.
A white male subject described as being in his fifties, medium build, approximately 5’6” tall, wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses and dark jacket entered the bank and presented a note to a teller demanding money. The subject did not display a handgun, but had what appeared to be a hand grenade or some type of device or facsimile explosive device strapped to his chest area. The teller turned over an undetermined amount of money and the subject calmly left the bank. Subsequent to his departure, the subject was involved in a hit and run motor vehicle accident that occurred on Old Kings Highway North in close proximity to the bank. The subject’s vehicle rear ended a vehicle stopped at a stop sign and quickly fled the scene of the accident. According to the accident victim/witness, the subject was operating a small subcompact vehicle, teal in color. As a result of the accident, the vehicle sustained front end damage. There were no injuries as a result of the accident. The bank robbery remains under investigation by the Darien Police Department’s Detective Division.
