School Resource Officer

The mission of the Darien Police Department’s School Resource Officer program is to assist the Darien Police Department and Board of Education in creating a positive educational environment for students at Darien High School and Middlesex Middle School, while simultaneously educating them on how law enforcement can be a positive resource for young adults.

In 2011, the Darien Police Department created the School Resource Officer (SRO) position at Darien High School. In 2019, the Police Department expanded the SRO program to Middlesex Middle School. In 2023, Officer Bryce Brown was selected to be the SRO at DHS and Officer Kevan Taggart was selected to be SRO at MMS.

The SROs are assigned to their respective schools on a full-time basis and they work closely with faculty, staff, and students to make the schools safer, more enriching environments. Their days are spent meeting with students, administration, support staff, and parents in regards to various issues or concerns. The SROs also visit classrooms to lecture on alcohol and drugs, search and seizure, and other law-related topics. The SROs often attend extra-curricular events, in an effort to further immerse themselves into the community and increase familiarity.
